Make a more realistic lightsaber with Photoshop
I like to take pictures, and my whole family is nerdy… so naturally, I’ve had to do a few lightsaber edits in the past. It’s actually very easy. The photo on the left was taken when we went to Disney World in December of 2015. Adeline (in her Darth Vader dress) was holding a blue plastic light saber. That wouldn’t do for Ms. Vader herself.
Adeline has since found her way to the light side, and in this tutorial I am going to show you how to edit the photo below (using photoshop), with her as Rey. If you don’t want to watch the video, you can read the instructions below. The entire process will take you less than 2 mins, it’s super easy!
Left: crappy plastic lightsaber. Right: More realistic lightsaber (in the color of your choice)
Here is what you need to do.
1.) Draw a rectangle
2.) Edit –> Transform Path –> distort. Move the four corners of the rectangle to follow the shape of the lightsaber, but be a little wider than the actual lightsaber. Hit enter when done.
3.) Change the fill to white and the line to whatever color you want your lightsaber to be. Make the line be about 20% the width of the white area at the base
4.) Filter –> Blur –> Gaussian Blur. Drag it to enough blur that it looks like a light saber.
If you found this tutorial helpful it would be awesome if you gave my video a like 🙂
If you don’t have photoshop, and have been put off by it’s huge price tag in the past, you might consider one of Adobe’s monthly plans. You can get photoshop and other tools for under $10/month.
